Tenda N301 Tutorial

Part 1: Getting Started with the N301

Before we begin, I will start off by saying this tutorial only applies to what is commonly known as “wireless bridged mode” or “client-AP mode,” although Tenda has a different term for this: "WISP mode". What wireless bridged mode allows you to do is to connect one wireless router to another wireless router without needing to use any wires! Though this tutorial will describe the Tenda N301, this tutorial should apply to any wireless router.

I'd also like to say if you prefer the official user manual, it can be found here.

Step 1:

The first thing you want to do is to connect the power. After about 20-30 seconds, you should be able to find your router using a wireless device, here you can see mine is listed as “Tenda_9A0830” and the security is open. To proceed, you must connect to the router. If you have an ethernet cable, you can use it to connect the router to your computer instead. Either way, you should be able to proceed and complete the next step.

Step 2:

The next step is to access your router’s web setup page. This address is typically one of these:

http://192.168.0.1

http://192.168.1.1

http://192.168.2.1

If none of these work, you should refer to your router’s documentation or look for a sticker on the router listing an IP address similar to these. You will typically see a page like the one below, requesting that you login.

Here, the default username and the default password are both the term “admin”, without the quotation marks. This is the case for all Tenda routers, but it may differ if your router is made by another manufacturer like D-Link.

Step 3:

Now we are shown a screen with a wireless password. This is the wireless password you will need to enter to access the Tenda router. I recommend setting it as soon as possible to prevent eavesdropping or snooping by anyone nearby. I also recommend using the highest available security on the router: in this case its WPA2 (AES).

When you have set a password on your wireless router, you should be disconnected from the router. You will have to reconnect to it if you were using a wireless connection to set it up.

When you are reconnecting to the router by Wi-Fi, you should notice that the router no longer shows up as “open” like it did earlier. This means that the password has been successfully set and we can move on to the next part of the tutorial.
